LPP and VOP CZ sign memorandum of understanding for Supacat’s HMT400

Prague, July 27, 2021 – British combat vehicle manufacturer Supacat is deepening its ties with the Czech military industry, building a network of Czech industrial partners to make sure that local economic benefits would follow the company’s selection to provide wheeled combat vehicles for the Czech Armed Forces.

Czech systems integrator LPP, and manufacturer and supplier of modern security and military solutions specialized on tracked and wheeled military land vehicles VOP CZ, have signed a memorandum of understanding which confirms the companies’ support for Supacat’s HMT400 wheeled combat vehicle in an anticipated tender for the renewal of the Czech Republic’s wheeled armoured vehicle capability.

The memorandum of understanding highlights Supacat’s intention to make local industrial involvement a key element of its bid to provide vehicles for the Czech Armed Forces. The company’s HMT400, nicknamed “Jackal” by the British Armed Forces, is a supremely versatile and adaptable contender for the Czech Republic’s new wheeled vehicle fleet. The HMT400 is battle-proven in operations in Afghanistan and comes with a range of customisable options ensuring optimal performance in any environment. The memorandum of understanding was signed on 16 Mar 2021 and primary covers roles of both companies, their business cooperation, consultation and mutual support for the Light Assault Vehicles project. LPP will cover contract activities, will take responsibility for delivery of complete functional system including Quality Management, Integration of electronic systems like communication, BMS, weapons, Support Services, Customer Interface and Ongoing Spares through Integrated Logistic Support. VOP CZ as a main partner on this program will utilize their facilities and knowledge of people in Production of Vehicle in all required versions, will produce parts for assembly accomplished in Novy Jicin premises. As strategic company belonging to MoD will be responsible also for Governmental Furnished Equipment and Repairs Level 3 and 4.

Supacat’s interest in supplying military vehicles for the Czech Armed Forces includes a vision for mutually beneficial industrial and knowledge-sharing partnerships with the Czech military industry, renowned the world over for its innovative capabilities. Earlier this year, the British military vehicle manufacturer deepened its cooperation with LPP through the signing of a Teaming Agreement.

On 22 July 2021, representatives of both Supacat and LPP, Miroslav Žižka and Phil Applegarth respectively, visited the VOP CZ facility in Nový Jičín. The facilities were reviewed in order to get acquainted with the possible production and servicing of HMT 400 vehicles.

Hybrid drive system for Supacat’s HMT400 promises enhanced capabilities

Supacat’s HMT400 is a favourite of the British Armed Forces, nicknamed “Jackal” by troops and commanders. To enhance operational capabilities, the British Ministry of Defence has contracted various organisations to design and produce hybrid electric-drive systems for some of their fleets, one of which is the HMT400.

The electric drive solution for the HMT400 is intended to deliver a range of operational benefits. Hybrid drive will allow silent mobility and enhanced silent watch capabilities for stealth operations, while on-board electrical power will allow the insertion of the latest technological upgrades and provide exportable power for other power-hungry demountable systems. The introduction of a hybrid drive system will also play a part in reducing reliance on fossil fuels, increasing armies’ long-term energy sustainability.

Supacat has a long-term interest in electric-drive military vehicles – as early as 2003, the company displayed the original Supacat GHOST concept at its UK proving ground. Such exploration of hybrid drive concepts forms just one part of the company’s emphasis on technical innovations providing the most effective solutions for soldiers on the front line.

General (retired) Žižka, Director of Strategic Projects at systems integrator LPP, confirms the interest of Supacat’s Czech potential customer and its partners in the hybrid drive solution. “Hybrid electric-drive solution is an intriguing opportunity, not only in the United Kingdom, but also for the Czech Republic’s forthcoming tender for the paratroopers. Such a system would provide promising possibilities for “stealth” operations not only for them, but it could be used also for special operation forces. This solution will positively influence operational logistics in terms of refuelling requirements.”

The British MoD will analyse the operational impact of the new technical capabilities for the HMT400 based on demonstrator models. A positive assessment could lead to the delivery of enhanced capabilities for Supacat’s HMT400 vehicles both in the UK, and around the world. Supacat has to date delivered over 1000 battle-proven vehicles into service globally.

Supacat Special Operations Vehicles Accepted in New Zealand

Supacat has announced that the fleet of Special Operations Vehicles – Mobility Heavy (SOV-MH) has been accepted by the New Zealand Ministry of Defence. The fleet goes into service with the New Zealand Defence Force early this year.

The new SOV-MH vehicles are based on the latest MkII version of Supacat’s HMT Extenda and provide a high level of commonality with the equivalent vehicles with other Special Forces. New Zealand is a new customer for Supacat and the latest defence force to join the HMT family.

Designed for, and used by, the world’s elite Special Forces, the HMT Extenda is unique in being convertible to either a 4×4 or 6×6 configuration to meet different operational requirements. Its open architecture provides for various levels of protection and great variety in the roles and missions for which it can be configured.

Michael Halloran, Managing Director Asia Pacific said, “We are very pleased to have achieved our first product export from the Australian office. It is a great credit to the Supacat Team Australia members that we have delivered this fleet on time and to budget.”

The SOV-MH vehicles were manufactured at Supacat’s existing assembly facilities in Australia using Supacat Team Australia members to manufacture and assemble the vehicle. This represents the first time that Supacat Team Australia members have exported completed vehicles and complements the opportunities already emerging for Australian suppliers to enter Supacat’s global supply chains.

Supacat exhibits at the NIDV Symposium and Exhibition in Rotterdam, 30 November 2017

Supacat, the acclaimed UK designer and manufacturer of special forces vehicles, is exhibiting at the Netherlands Industries for Defence and Security (NIDV) Symposium and Exhibition on Thursday 30 November 2017. Having recently been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade, for Outstanding Short-Term Growth), the NIDV event forms part of a global marketing effort aimed to capitalise on recent export successes.

Supacat will be exhibiting their Light Reconnaissance Vehicle 400 (LRV 400) at the event. The LRV 400 provides a highly versatile tactical capability for special forces; it can be transported centrally inside a CH-47 Chinook fully equipped and loaded, making it immediately and rapidly deployable. Also, it has the unique feature of being convertible from 4×4 to 6×6 to provide a flexible alternative configuration that increases payload, capacity and range to meet different operational requirements. Supacat intends to offer the LRV into a number of vehicle procurement programmes in the region and the NIDV show is seen as an ideal platform to showcase the capabilities on offer. Supacat has teamed with Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Nederland B.V. to offer the LRV 400 into upcoming procurement programmes in the Netherlands. If an order is received, then RMMV will assemble Supacat vehicles in-country.

With over 1000 specialist, battle-proven vehicles in service across the globe, Supacat designed the LRV400 to fill the gap in the market for an agile off-road vehicle sized between its HMT 400 Series (GVW 7600kg) and quad bikes. It carries a crew of 3 or 4 supported by an operational payload of 1700kg with a GVW under 5000kg. It can achieve high speeds on or off road and can operate up to 800km from the point of insertion, offering special forces a true long-range capability.

Phil Applegarth, Head of Supacat said “we have been very successful in winning a number of major export orders for our special forces vehicles in recent years and we would like to capitalise on that success by offering our products more widely”.
