In the last twelve-months the absence of military exhibitions and events, continues to be felt globally and has significantly impacted many SME’s and OEM’s.
Each show provided a virtual experience demonstration, showcasing our latest technology innovation, and exploring the latest capabilities for Land Forces and Commercial Applications.
A testament to the extent of the HMT Extenda Mk 2 capabilities; Greg Burton, Senior Director at DEW Engineering has published an article talking about the raw engineering of this Next Generation Fighting Vehicle and how it will bridge the gap on the five eyes with Canada.

Supacat is proud of its participation with the Rheinmetall LAND 400 team. Since the early part of the bidding process, Supacat has participated in the LAND 400 program. Supacat played a key role in supporting the RMA phase of the program and continue to support Rheinmetall as an embedded partner in the acquisition phase of the program.
Rheinmetall has been pro-active in seeking Australian industrial involvement for the program and Supacat has used its experience to support the development of relevant industrial capability in Australia. Over the past five years, Supacat has continuously developed its people, processes and capabilities to engage fully with the Rheinmetall team and support the needs of the LAND 400 program, including a growing presence in Rheinmetall facilities both in Germany and Australia. Supacat has also encouraged its supply chain in the development of their capabilities to meet the exacting standards of the program.
In doing so, Supacat continues to demonstrate not just our commitment to Rheinmetall, but that its place as a significant contributor to the Land Combat Vehicle Sovereign Industrial Capability in Australia.

Supacat was established in Australia in 2012 and has rapidly grown as a Compact Prime, delivering development, acquisition and support programs to the Commonwealth and global defence primes. The grant will be used by Supacat to further develop its capabilities in ICT security infrastructure, design lifecycle management and supply chain integration with particular focus on enhancing its integration with Rheinmetall on the LAND400 program and growing its presence within the Rheinmetall global supply chains.

An emergency ventilator originally designed to treat COVID-19 patients has been re-imagined in the form of a portable, easy to use, low cost field ventilator by innovative engineering company Supacat.
Supacat provides engineering services to a range of military and civilian customers within Australia and Europe. Its core capabilities include platform and system integration design, prototype development and high end dynamic structural analysis.
The coronavirus pandemic inspired Supacat to start working on the project to design and make a simple ventilator as an answer to, what was, a potentially life threatening shortage of ventilators in Australia.
Supacat conducted a market survey and found an open source design for a ventilator by M.I.T, called the E-vent that fit the criteria and could serve as the starting point for a design. A team of in-house experts and existing teaming partners quickly gathered to collaborate on the research and development to produce a working prototype.
As time went on, it became apparent that the Australian health care system was able to manage the virus and built a sufficient stockpile of hospital grade ventilators. As a result of this, Supacat switched its attention to developing the ventilator as a field ventilator that has utility outside a hospital environment.
“The idea of the field emergency ventilator is that it mimics the use of a manual ventilator with a higher degree of accuracy and consistency. The field ventilator is easily transportable, highly portable and can be used straight out of the box” said Michael Halloran, Supacat Managing Director.
“We’ve demonstrated the idea with a production-ready prototype. The prototype is a fully contained unit which includes the mechanisms, control system and necessary medical bags and tubing”.
Mr. Halloran was pleased with the collaborative effort by Supacat employees and Supacat Team Australia partners, “when we approached some of our existing partners to see if they would be interested in supporting the effort, the answer was always yes”.
The field ventilators can be manufactured quickly and cost effectively right here in Australia. Supacat is looking for opportunities to trial the ventilator as it believes there is great potential for it to become an essential piece of medical apparatus used to support medics away from established hospitals and medical centres.

Supacat was delighted today to be represented at the ceremony handing over the first Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle to the Commonwealth at Gallipoli Barracks.
Supacat has been involved with Rheinmetall on the LAND 400 program since 2015. To date the contribution has largely been on engineering, trials, prototyping and testing, but as the program has moved into the production element, Supacat has commenced design and build activities.
The first Boxer CRV is fitted with external racks designed by Supacat specifically to cater for the Australian Army’s requirements. The racks were designed by the Supacat engineering team in Port Melbourne and have been delivered from Supacat’s assembly facility in Western Sydney.
In delivering these first parts, Supacat drew on the expertise developed through its delivery of its HMT programs in Australia and New Zealand in partnership with Australian SME’s under the Supacat Team Asia Pacific banner. These first deliveries exercised the skills of a number of Australian SMEs including Able Industries, Hoffmann Engineering and C.E. Bartlett. Supacat’s involvement in the program clearly illustrates the benefits of the enduring capability developed as a result of Defence Industry policy.

As part of Supacat’s corporate social responsibility program Australian Managing Director, Michael Halloran has been active in seeking ways in which the company can work with Australian initiatives designed to support service and ex-service personal.
Supacat is thrilled to officially announce their support of Trojans Trek and their endeavours to rebuild the well-being and mental health of veterans who have been adversely affected by their service.
An introduction was made between Trojans Trek Chairman, Moose Dunlop OAM and Mr Halloran and it was soon discovered that a collaboration between the two organisations would be would be a great fit. Following the initial discussions, Mr Dunlop travelled to Sydney to attend Supacat’s Annual Dinner on 24th October and share the story of Trojan’s Trek with government representatives in defence, partners and customers of Supacat.
Michael Halloran, Supacat Managing Director said “When we set out to find a veteran’s charity to focus our support on, I was amazed to discover that there were 3,200 veteran based charities in Australia. When we came across Trojan’s Trek, we felt immediately that we were on common ground. Their approach to outdoor peer support simply made sense. Trojan’s Trek has largely flown under the radar, because they have put all of their focus on the outcomes of what they do. They have had great results with minimum support, and we hope that with Supacat’s support they can provide that support to anyone that needs it.”
“Of course, the challenges of mental health and wellbeing go beyond the impacts of PTSD that Trojan’s Trek primarily supports. We see these challenges in our own business and ultimately we believe that this collaboration will be beneficial for our own staff as well.”
Supacat and Rheinmetall Defence Australia have signed a new partnership agreement to encompass Supacat’s participation in the LAND 400 Phase 2 acquisition program. Supacat will be among a small number of Tier 1 partners on the program with a broad range of activities across engineering development, systems requirements and validation and manufacturing of sub systems.
The teaming agreement provides the implementation framework for Supacat’s ongoing strategic partnering relationship. As an embedded partner on the program Supacat aims to be a seamless member of Rheinmetall Defence Australia’s LAND 400 program team.

In addition to delivering its own products and services within Australia, the region and globally, Supacat is proud of its collaboration with the Rheinmetall LAND 400 team from the early stages of the bidding process through to playing a key role in the RMA phase of the program. After delivering 89 special operations vehicles (SOV) to the Australian Army, Supacat is looking to sell its family of High Mobility Transporter (HMT) vehicles into other markets.
Managing director of Supacat, Michael Halloran, told DTR that the focus is now on exports. “We want to go into Asia. We think there are good opportunities in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and maybe Thailand.”
In an era where combat vehicle dimensions and weight seem to be on an upward curve, the modest size of the HMT Extenda Mk 2 and a maximum weight of 10.5 tonnes make them well suited to the complex terrain and compromised infrastructure common throughout much of the South East Asian region.
The HMT Extenda Mk 2 was designed as, and remains, the most capable cross-country wheeled vehicle in its class. The unique suspension design along with the balanced arrangement of the vehicle, maximises the traction that is available from each wheel, providing high cross-country mobility.
Ease of operation, design flexibility and versatility also opens up the potential for the HMT Extenda Mk 2 for use in undertaking a range of roles within armies which may not have top tier fleet sustainment resources.
Running in parallel with the export push is an interest in promoting the other roles which the HMT Extenda Mk 2 can perform other than special operations missions.
“What the Australian Army now has in its inventory in the SOV-Commando is an incredibly versatile platform, and we need to get people to understand that so we can start thinking about applications for the vehicle outside special forces,” Mr Halloran said.
To illustrate this point, Supacat has mounted an Elbit Cardom 81mm mortar pack on the rear cargo bed of a 4×4 HMT Extenda Mk 2. This will be on display at the Land Forces 2018 defence exhibition in early September in Adelaide.
“If you think of the spectrum of capabilities,” Mr Halloran said, “we go from a platform with a mortar on the back through to the lightweight recovery vehicle at the top end, and everything else in between.”
The 6×6 version of the HMTExtenda Mk 2 are particularly well suited to undertake additional roles, with a 4m long rear cargo bed (extendable to 4.8m) and 3,474kg payload providing the potential to mount mission modules, weapon systems or transport cargo.
Examples of 6×6 protected cab and open design variants at the concept/prototype stage include a light recovery vehicle and a tractor with rear cargo bed.
Supacat, which is a member of the Rheinmetall Land 400 team, welcomes the announcement of the selection of the Boxer CRV and Rheinmetall as the preferred tenderer for Phase 2 of the LAND 400 program. Supacat believes that Defence has chosen the outstanding capability to serve the Australian Army.
