The role is responsible for developing the company’s capability in Australia and leading the electrical engineering activities through the entire life cycle, from understanding requirements through business case, design, safety, validation and delivery. A role made for someone with strategic vision, commercial nous and leadership skills, who still enjoys the challenges of hands on engineering and product development.
- Strategic Leadership and Hands-on Engineering
- Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth or Auckland location
We are a young technology business operating primarily in the Defence sector with a growing footprint in other sectors. Our core business is ultra-high mobility, wheeled vehicles and we are the OEM of a range of vehicles from 450kg to 12T GVM and currently in service with the Australian and NZ armies. We also apply our skills to other areas, such as working with defence primes on large programs and consulting into the automotive industry.
We are a relatively small business to be doing all of this and that means we rely on the senior members of our team to be leaders; to work directly with our customers, to bring some industry insight and experience to proceedings, to form and lead teams and to get the job done.
You will be excited about the opportunity to leave your fingerprints on the business. You’ll be capable of presenting concepts to customers one day and nutting out pin connector details the next. You’ll enjoy working with like-minded colleagues and you’ll be able to form and get the best out of a small team. You’ll appreciate the autonomy to get things done your way, while recognising the accountability to deliver to the customer. You’ll appreciate the flexibility provided by having a focus on getting the job done, rather than clocking in to the office on set hours and sitting through a lot of meetings.
About the Role
The day to day element of the role is to evolve the electrical automotive systems within our vehicles and integrate new electronic systems in concert with our defence customers’ needs and processes. In particular, this is about understanding how systems (eg communications systems) function in vehicle mounted operations and includes design and validation for EMI/EMC, antenna placement, filtering, pathway separation etc. The strategic element of the role is to oversee the development of the electrical systems in our new platforms with an emphasis on drive by wire and hybrid/electric drive.
The role will require you to have the technical ability and experience to act as technical lead and the design authority for electrical systems. It requires the ability to lead a small team of engineers, technicians and supply chain people. You will also need to liaise with the technical leads in our sister company in the UK and customer technical leads throughout Europe, North America and Asia.
While our engineering team is primarily located in Port Melbourne, we have offices in Sydney (Ingleburn), Brisbane, Perth and Auckland. You could be based at any of these.
Absolute minimum criteria for the role:
The Small Print
- Sufficient experience to do the role
- Degree qualified in electrical or electronics engineering
- Have, or the ability to obtain, an Australian Defence Security Clearance
- Strong understanding of Defence Systems Engineering and V&V processes
